  • Geoffrey Eames was a Justice in the Trial Division of the Supreme Court of Victoria in 1992 to 2002 and a Justice of the Court of Appeal 2002 to 2007.

    He was an acting Justice of the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in 2007-2008.

    Mr Eames holds the Practitioners Certificate in Mediation from the Institute of Arbitrators and Mediators Australia and has been elected an Associate Member of the Institute
    Mr. Eames retired as a Victorian judge in July 2007, and since then has been engaged as an acting judge, as a consultant for the Victorian Law Reform Commission, and as a consultant engaged by Government in Victoria and elsewhere.

    Mr. Eames was admitted to the Victorian Bar in 1969 and was admitted to practice in the Northern Territory (1974), South Australia (1980) and New South Wales (1986). He took silk in South Australia, Victoria and the Northern Territory in 1990. His practice as a barrister was wide – ranging, including commercial law, criminal law, personal injuries, workers compensation, immigration law, professional negligence, administrative law.

    Mr. Eames had extensive experience in the conduct of hearings and negotiations concerning Aboriginal land claims in the Northern Territory. He was counsel in the Marine Inquiry into the sinking of the “Blyth Star” and in the Marine Inquiry into the sinking of “The Straitsman”; he was counsel assisting the Inquiry by the Auditor General of South Australia into the collapse of the State Bank; he was counsel for Aboriginal individuals and groups in the Royal Commission into British Nuclear tests in Australia, and senior counsel assisting the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody.

    Mr. Eames is the former Chief Counsel and Director of the Legal Services Commission of South Australia.

    In 2007 he was awarded Life Membership from the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration.
