  • Graduated LLB, Melbourne University 1987. Attended Leo Cussen Institute in 1988. Admitted to practice as a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Victoria on 2 November 1988.
    Employed by the Victorian Legal Aid Commission, Melbourne until he commenced his reading with Ross Ray QC and Maureen Hickey QC.
    Counsel practices criminal law. His is a trial and appellate practice. The main focus of his practice has been trial defence work. He has, however, appeared in the Australian Crime Commission, the Human Rights Commission and the Coroner's Court.
    Previously, he practiced in accident compensation and industrial law.
    He was convenor of Amnesty International Geelong for 15 years. In 1994, he spoke at the International Bar Association's biennial Conference in Melbourne on human rights violations in Sudan.
    He is a past President of Geelong Community Legal Service Incorporated and taught Corporations law for a number of years at Deakin University. Prior to studying law, counsel taught English literature and drama in state secondary schools. He studied theatre at the British Theatre Association in London. While in the United Kingdom, he worked at Outward Bound at Burghead in Scotland.
    Counsel has published a number of articles in the Law Institute Journal. He has been a law reporter for the Victorian Reports for 15 years.
    He is a trustee of the Dean Chamberlin Charitable Foundation, the charitable arm of the Australian Cricket Society.
    In his youth, counsel rode a Honda 250 from Cape Reinga in the North Island to Invercargill in the South Island of New Zealand. He chairs the Appellate Body of Motorcycling Victoria. He was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation by the Federal Government for his work with the Geelong-Viqueque Friendship Committee, a local council initiative in the rebuilding of East Timor.
    He enjoys the challenge of hard cases.
