Paul initially came to the Bar in 2001 with a foundation of 12 years with Victoria Police, including 8 years as a prosecutor. At the Bar he developed an extensive criminal trial practice. He prosecuted and defended matters in the County Court involving serious crime such as sexual assault, armed robbery, drug trafficking and serious assaults.
He left the Bar in 2006 and worked as a solicitor advocate in Bendigo for 2 years specialising in criminal law and crimes compensation. His practice covered all country courts in the northern regional cities and towns. He assisted Victoria Legal Aid with court appearances on the private practitioner scheme and worked as a volunteer at the Loddon ? Campaspe Community Legal Centre in Bendigo. He was a member of both the Victoria Legal Aid Summary and Indictable Crime Panels.
Paul has returned to the Bar in May 2008 and will accept briefs in all criminal courts.
As an adjunct to his criminal practice he will accept briefs in the Victims of Crime Assistance Tribunal and compensation applications pursuant to section 85B of the Sentencing Act. In early 2008 he successfully obtained significant compensation in the County Court for childhood abuse which occurred over 40 years prior.
A particular interest of Paul?s is Occupational Health and Safety law, having both defended and prosecuted. He was regularly briefed By the Victorian Workcover Authority for appearances and advice. In 2003 he successfully prosecuted AGL Electricity, as junior prosecuting counsel, in a County Court trial lasting 13 days, involving the death of a tradesman by electrocution.
After leaving Victoria Police he completed his articles year and spent 12 months representing asylum seekers pursuant to the UNHCR and making submissions to the Refugee Review Tribunal.
Although being now based in Melbourne Paul welcomes briefs in all criminal courts on circuit in Bendigo, Ballarat and all northern regions.
